Touch and smell are closely linked to our emotional, physical, and mental health. However, they often take a back seat to the more obvious senses of sight and hearing in today’s world. In a world full of screens and digital noise, we often ignore our grounding and nourishing senses. Reconnecting with touch and smell can boost our mindfulness. It also helps with healing, relaxation, and emotional balance.

The Sense of Touch:

Touch is a primal sense that forms the foundation of our human experience. It is essential to our survival, well-being, and emotional health. From the moment we are born, our skin is the first point of contact with the world. As we grow, touch continues to shape our relationships, emotions, and how we connect with others.

A gentle touch, like massage, can release oxytocin. This hormone is linked to bonding, trust, and relaxation. When I began volunteering as a community end-of-life visitor, one patient, a woman close to the end of her life, responded deeply to the gentle massage of her hands.

She was frail, and her physical body could no longer endure traditional therapeutic interventions. However, as I massaged her hands, she opened her eyes and softly spoke, “It’s nice. I haven’t been touched like that since my husband died… that was over 25 years ago.”

This moment stayed with me. It highlighted the deep, often overlooked need for human touch, especially for those at the end of life. Touch brings comfort and connection. It reminds us that, even when we feel vulnerable, we still deserve care, tenderness, and love.

Massaging the hands or feet works well. These areas are sensitive and linked to many reflexology points in the body. Through touch, we can release tension, soothe the nervous system, and reconnect with our own body.

The Sense of Smell:

Smell is one of the most ancient and evocative senses. Smell is different from other senses because it connects directly to the limbic system. This part of the brain handles emotions and memory. A familiar scent can quickly spark memories, stir emotions, or offer comfort and safety. Essential oils have therapeutic properties. They connect scent and emotional well-being.

Using essential oils in our daily routines can help us feel grounded. They can relieve stress, boost relaxation, and improve mental clarity.

Incorporating Touch and Smell into Daily Life:

To bring more presence and balance into your daily routine, here are some ways you can incorporate these sensory experiences:

  1. Morning or Evening Ritual: Start or end your day with a simple hand or foot massage using essential oils. This could be part of a self-care ritual to ground yourself and set an intention for the day or night ahead.
  2. Breathing and Mindfulness Practices: When you do deep breathing or meditate, use a diffuser with calming scents like lavender or sandalwood. As you breathe deeply, allow the aroma to anchor you in the present moment.
  3. Incorporate into Daily Tasks: Put a drop of essential oil on a tissue or cotton ball. Carry it with you and inhale the scent when you need calm or a moment to reconnect.
  4. Create a Relaxing Environment: Use essential oils in a diffuser during the day. This helps to make your space calming, uplifting, or grounding based on how you feel.

Integrating touch and smell into our daily routines helps us connect better with our bodies and the present moment. A simple hand massage or a calming scent can help restore balance, reduce stress, and promote healing in many ways. The story of the woman at the end of her life shows us that simple touches can help us reconnect with our humanity. They also bring comfort in our final moments.
