What’s a common misconception people have about happiness?

The Misunderstanding of Happiness

People often search for happiness
as though it has wandered off
wearing someone else’s face,
hiding in a future room,
waiting behind the right door,
the right answer,
the right hand reaching back.

They are told it lives in arrival,
in applause,
in being chosen,
in being loved without interruption,
in a life that finally behaves itself.

But happiness is quieter than that.

It does not always enter singing.
Sometimes it is the small golden warmth
behind the ribs,
the soft remembering
that we belong to ourselves
before we belong anywhere else.

It is not a prize handed over
by another person’s approval.
It is not a lantern
someone else must agree to light.

Happiness begins inside,
in the sovereign country of the heart,
where no one else holds the border,
where presence becomes a kind of sunlight,
and awareness opens the windows.

It asks to be noticed,
not chased.

It asks for the breath
to come home to the body,
for the mind to stop bargaining
with yesterday and tomorrow,
for the soul to sit down
at its own table
and eat.

And when it is tended,
it glows.

Not loudly.
Not to prove anything.
But warmly,
the way dawn enters a room
without needing permission.

This is the truth
many forget:

happiness is not dependent
on who stays,
who understands,
who claps,
who contributes,
who finally sees us clearly.

It may be shared, yes,
and love may make it brighter,
but its root is deeper
than circumstance.

It is an inner weather,
a sacred steadiness,
a flame beneath the passing sky.

And when we remember this,
we stop asking the world
to become perfect
before we allow ourselves
to be whole.

We return to the heart,
where happiness has been waiting,
not as a visitor,
but as an inheritance.
