A Higher Love💜💙

There are lyrics that pass through us
like music through an open window,
beautiful for a moment,
then gone.

And there are others
that take up quiet residence in the heart.

For me, it is:

“Bring me a higher love.”

Perhaps it stayed because it never sounded
like a request for romance alone.

It felt like a call toward something larger,
a love beyond possession,
beyond bargaining,
beyond the fragile arrangements
we sometimes mistake for permanence.

A higher love might be the courage
to remain kind without becoming unguarded,
to forgive without abandoning ourselves,
to keep the heart open
while still knowing where its boundaries belong.

It may be the love that appears
when life has stripped away certainty,
when the old ways of coping no longer hold,
and something deeper within us whispers
that we are not finished becoming.

I have heard that lyric differently
at different points in my life.

Sometimes as longing.
Sometimes as prayer.
Sometimes as a reminder
that love is not only something
we wait to receive.

It is something we cultivate,
something we embody,
something we offer through presence,
through compassion,
through the simple decision
not to add more fear to the world.

Perhaps a higher love is not waiting
somewhere above us after all.

Perhaps it is already here,
quietly asking to be recognised
in the way we care for one another,
in the way we accompany those who are suffering,
and in the tenderness we finally learn
to extend towards ourselves.

That lyric has stayed with me
because the longing within it is timeless.

Not merely:

Bring me someone to love.

But:

Bring me closer
to the truest expression of love
I am capable of becoming.
